Sights of Rethymnon

The town of Rethymno, built next to a wide sandy beach, with a picturesque Venetian harbor, is a small town, one of the best preserved medieval towns in Greece. The city center is located under the walls of the Venetian castle Fortezza which was built by the Venetians in 1573. There are indications of the existence of the city of Rethymno with a highly developed trade from the 5th century.

Venetian Harbor

Venetian Castle Fortezza

Fortezza is built on a hill called Paleokastro where the acropolis of ancient Rethymno was located. Today the fortress of Forteza is the most important monument of Rethymno, a trademark of the city.

Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi is the most historic monastery in Crete, which became a symbol of the Cretans' struggle for freedom, after the tragic holocaust of 1866 took place there with the explosion of the wine cellar where the revolutionaries kept the gunpowder. It has been designated by UNESCO as a European Freedom Monument.

Holy Monastery of Preveli

The historic Monastery of Prevelis is one of the most famous monasteries of Crete as it has played an important role in the liberation struggles of Crete. It consists of the Lower Monastery of Prodromos and the Rear Monastery of Theologus. It is located in a magnificent and green location and has an unobstructed sea view.

Kourtaliotis Gorge

The Kourtaliotis gorge and its large waterfall are among the most impressive natural attractions of the prefecture of Rethymno. The Kourtaliotis river passes through it and is characterized by exceptional aesthetic, biological and ecological value.

Cave of Melindoni

The cave of Melidoni is located near the village of Melidoni and has great archaeological and historical importance. In the central hall of the cave, an ossuary has been placed, with the bones of the heroes who were trapped and burned alive by the Ottoman army in 1824.
